"Affe" means monkey in German - affenpinschers sometimes have a monkey-like expression on their face. Affenpinschers were originally ratters, removing rodents from kitchens and similar undesired places. The affenpinscher originated in Germany during the seventeenth century. While similar to terriers, affenpinschers are actually part of the pinscher-schnauzer group of dog breeds.
