"Affe" means monkey in German - affenpinschers sometimes have a monkey-like expression on their face. Affenpinschers were originally ratters, removing rodents from kitchens and similar undesired places. While similar to terriers, affenpinschers are actually part of the pinscher-schnauzer group of dog breeds.
